The Promise

By Emmanuel Ngwa

He promised you heaven

But he took you to hell.

Then, he promised you love

Yet, he littered your heart with hate.

You could tell from the sound of his voice that he didn’t mean these words.

Yet, all you wanted was to believe them that you had hid his name in the deepest corner of your heart.

You had said you’d choose him over your father, and that you’d pick his company over your favorite dish.

You had said you’d choose his company over a warm bath in winter

Now, you wish you didn’t say those words.

But you also know those were the words he wanted to hear, not what he needed to.

Besides, he had lied that while he sleeps, his heart stayed awake thinking of you — that his love takes you to wonderland.
